Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and have a portraits session! Last year I shot with mama to be, Bella J. We were inspired by her love of all things rustic (and the fact she lives on a farm). For her maternity session we did a few “boudoir style” as a surprise gift to her husband, then a few with daddy to be and the family pooch! “There are a couple of reasons I wanted to do this. Firstly, I work long, challenging hours as an RN and I thought it would be a different and great way to spend the day. I see so much sickness and sadness in my job and that gets to me sometimes. At times it makes me fear the future; my future, my parents future, I’m afraid and aware that I could very well someday be in the position of one of my patients. I needed an experience completely different. Something to make me feel good! Sexy! Inside and out. I needed to see something different from within myself. I’ve always wanted to do a shoot like this but I felt that I had “no one” to do it for. This opportunity presented itself and I wanted it. For no one but myself :). Then it happened, I did it! And it felt fabulous.
From the moment I arrived to Karen’s studio I was greeted with genuine kindness, light heartedness and professionalism! Karen has perfected a balancing act between warmth, that is, making you feel comfortable enough to get photographed in your skivvies with no fear of judgement, and also maintaining a fantastic business demeanour. Her makeup artist, Jenny, was also incredible. When I looked in the mirror after hair and make-up, I gasped. I felt like I was on one of those makeover shows. She was amazing! During the shoot, of course a little nervous at first, Karen told me exactly what I needed to do for her to get the shot she envisioned for me. It took me no time to feel like I was right where I needed to be. I had no idea what it was going to look like but I trusted her entirely.
I feel like I took a lot away from doing this. The whole experience was amazing but I think my favourite part was actually getting comfortable in lingerie! I’ve always been so shy about wearing it and now I’m looking forward to actually getting into something sexy and rocking it for my significant other!” Bella G
